A New Type Of Liquid Crystals Developed That Will Significantly Improve Device Screens

Scientsits successfully managed to develop a new type of crystal that would be widely used in the newest generations of LCD TV’s and computer monitors which could improve the resolution and energy efficiency.
„Today Apple’s screens ‘Retina’ have resolution of around 500 pixels per inch“, says Shin-Tson Wu, lead scientist of the project, a professor at The College of Optics and Photonics, University of Central Florida.

„With our new technology, a screen with the same size, could reach a resolution of around 1,500 pixels per inch. This is interesting in particular with the VR equipment, which in basic, has to have big resolution on a small screen so that the objects on screen would look sharp when placed closer to the eyes.“.

Current HD displays have a layer of liquid crystal to modulate the white back light of the LCD light on which a couple of colour filters are used inm order to produce red, blue and green pixels. When all three filters are used at same time, the result is white light.

The new type of liquid crystal could modulate the light much faster than the current liquid crystal and also eliminates the need of filters. The elimination of the filters means that it will also reduce the quantity of energy that is lost during the transfer of the light, which makes this process much more efficient.
