Meet The Most Powerful Graphic Card Today
nVidia is very proud of it’s newest models of graphic cards for which they claim to be “the most powerful graphic cards today.”
The company presented it’s newest generation of flagship graphic cards, GTX 1080 and the cheaper version GTX 1070.
Both graphic cards are based on nVidia Pascal architecture, while for production they used 16nm FinFET process, which makes them even three times more efficient than the Maxwell architecture.
Pascal uses a 16nm (nanometer) process, where Maxwell used a 28nm process. This means Nvidia can fit more transistors (the bits that do the computing work) into a smaller space while consuming less power, meaning the whole GPU is a lot more efficient and runs cooler.
These graphic cards, also are smaller and have stunning number of 7,2 billion transistors.
GTX 1080 is using 2560 CUDA cores. The power stroke of these cores is 1607 MHz which in boost mode can reach up to 1733 MHz. The graphic card can also be overclocked with the new GPU Boost 3.0.
The memory is one of the greatest improvements, therefore this graphic card comes with 8GB GDDR5X memory and 256-bit „BAS“ memory. The GTX 1080 graphic card is 20 to 25% faster than the previous flagship card Titan X and even 65% faster than the GTX 980. GTX 1080 also has an advanced cooling system which is also more efficient than the previous models.
Nvidia claims the GTX 1080 will be twice as fast when performing certain VR workloads when compared to the Titan X. While this will leave Titan X owners weeping, it’s worth mentioning that such a performance difference might not be quite so sharp in other tasks.
Nvidia’s main justifications for this are based on the addition of two new technologies, unique to Pascal, specifically for VR.
The first technology is called Lens Matched Shading. Put simply, this wastes less time shading pixels that will ultimately never be seen by the user. This is done by more accurately understanding the exact dimensions of a VR headset and not bothering to calculate shading on objects that won’t ever be seen. This reduces overall load.
The second is Single Pass Stereo. Previously, a GPU would have to render geometry (3D objects) twice: once for each screen on a VR headset. Single Pass Stereo negates that need, performing the necessary calculations to display an object on both screens in one pass instead of two.
GTX 1070 is somehow weaker than GTX 1080, but also comes with CUDA cores, however it is unknown with how many. The power stroke of these cores is also unknown. GDDR5X memory is replaced with GDDR5 memory with 8GB. The 16nm FinFET process is also used to manufacture this graphic card.
The price of the GTX 1080 will be $599 dollars (Founders Edition $699 dollars), while the price of the GTX 1070 will be $379 dollars (Founders Edition $499 dollars). Release date will be on March, 27th for GTX 1080, and June, 10th for GTX 1070.
