Language barriers don’t exist when its a matter of art. And to me, cinematography is one of the favorite ones. This time I’d like to place a spotlight on the German movie from the 2006 – “Perfume: The Story of a Murder.” However, I found very interesting that even tho this movie is German, everything in it is – French.

“Perfume” is a fantasy / thriller, that takes us around 200 years back in the period of the French revolution and telling us a terrifying story of murder and obsession set in 18th-century France. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille has a unique talent for discerning the scents and smells that swirl around him, which he uses to create the world’s finest perfumes. Strangely lacking any scent of his own, he becomes obsessed with capturing the irresistible but elusive aroma of young womanhood. As Grenouille’s obsession turns deadly as Grenouille still lacks the final ingredient to complete his quest…
This movie is R-rated (for aberrant behavior involving nudity, violence, sexuality, and disturbing images.)

This movie had 17 nominations and won 15 awards. Among the awards were:
Film Award in Gold in 2007 for Best Cinematography (Beste Kamera/Bildgestaltung) to Frank Griebe, Best Editing (Bester Schnitt) to Alexander Berner, Best Production Design (Bestes Szenenbild) to Uli Hanisch, Best Costume Design (Bestes Kostümbild) to Pierre-Yves Gayraud, and Best Sound (Beste Tongestaltung) to Stefan Busch, Dirk Jacob, Michael Kranz, Frank Kruse, Matthias Lempert, Hanse Warns, Roland Winke, at German Film Awards in 2007,
Film Award in Silver in 2007 for Outstanding Feature Film (Programmfüllende Spielfilme) to Bernd Eichinger, at German Film Awards in 2007,
European Film Award in 2007 for European Cinematographer to Frank Griebe, at European Film Awards in 2007.
